I guess Ive been in the same situation for the last 4-5 years, where Im never happy in the sense that Im depressed or sluggish, a wallflower. I was wondering, do self-help books really work? Any success stories out there? or are they just another way for people to make money off of people’s problems?

I’d like to know if anyone has some good recommendations for books to improve a teenager’s self esteem, help them be a better and happier person, and change their outlook on life. Thanks in advance.

Which book would you want to buy if you had to choose of being called an Idiot or a dummy. I think I’d rather be called a dummie, idiot sound so much more insulting, what do you think? They need to make special books for politicians, what could they call it?

I imagine I’m not alone in saying that most of my family members are simply “a mess”. I swear I was switched at birth. Regardless, this doesn’t stop me from feeling this sense of obligation to them to help them progress successfully through their various situations. However, I know they have to WALK THE WALK themselves, because no amount of advise I gave them (which they asked for) has EVER worked. So, many months ago I stopped giving advise or listening the drama.. completely. It saddens me that they’re so lost.

Recently I found some good, short, self-help books by AC Ping and while reading through them I kept thinking about my family and how I wished they could understand how they are perpetuating the negativity and stagnation that IS their lives.

So I wonder, would you give a self-help book to a loved one? Do you think most people would be insulted? Also, if someone is unable to see that they need to change, do you think it would do them any good anyway?
I guess I did leave out some important info… The books are titled: BE and DO. I read through one in a couple hours. They aren’t badgering or demeaning and they aren’t about any specific thing that one needs to “do better”. They are about life in general and about asking yourself important questions about who you are and who you want to be…
I think of them as more motivational books; however, they are filed as self-help.

Me asked:

I need to read a book that will help me in my personal life. I am constantly worried about failing. Low self esteem and really sensesive. When I let people down, it makes me very depressed. I am tired of feeling this way and I do not want to seek counseling just yet. I want to stop caring so much about what other people say or think.

If anyone out there has been successful with a self-help program, please post the details.

If you’ve lost weight/stopped procrastinating/learned to be more optimistic & cheerful/become better at making friends–whatever. Share the details, and the titles of any books that helped you change your life!

I’m looking to get a general idea of how many people would read self-help books. Can be about anything, psycology, relationships, emotions, depression, etc.
