Recommended Mystery Novels?

Mystery Novels
♥ e d e n ♥ asked:

For my high school English course, I need to read a bunch of mystery novels.

What are some good ones for a teenager? I’m a good reader so I want something more advanced than the regular teen mystery book, yet something not too gory or nightmarish (I have an active imagination =P)

I am going to recommend a mix of types, from classics to contemporary:

The Hound of the Baskervilles — Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes — could read any of them, such as The Sign of Four)

The Maltese Falcon — Dashiell Hammett
The Long Goodbye — Raymond Chandler
(the two classic American private eyes Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe)

Murder of Roger Ackroyd — Agatha Christie
(English puzzle mystery, by the best known author)

39 Steps — John Buchan (clasic adventure mystery)

    Some Funny mysteries:

The Hot Rock — Donald Westlake
    Fletch — Gregory MacDonald
The Spellman Files — Lisa Lutz

    HIstorical Mysteries –
Time and Again — Jack Finney
Daughter of Time — Josephine Tey
Name of the Rose — Umberto Eco

More authors to read one or two of:

    Rex Stout
    Tony Hillerman
    Sue Grafton
    Walter Mosley
    Ruth Rendell

I’ve tried to stay away from overly violent or “nightmarish” books, but some of Ruth Rendell’s books can be pretty intense. There are of course many more to choose from, buyt I though a selection rather than a comprehensive list would be useful to you.
