OK asked: Many publishers won’t publish for authors that have never published before. So where do you start? Many popular authors started with short stories in science fiction magazines, but those magazines are not very popular nowadays, so there aren’t many places to get published, and they can be real competetive since there are so few. What can I do?

asked: What is your favorite theme in science fiction movies, books, television or any form?
Is it the future or the past, time travel, space travel, alien worlds and visitors, fantasy worlds of the Dungeons and Dragons type, big brother totalitarian societies, paranormal or psychic phenomena or whatever? What type of theme do you enjoy most, why, and what is your favorite particular work or series of the entire genre?
This is not a question where you have to agree with what I happen to think, like so many questions are. Just make it the most interesting answer and earn some points!

Justin Case asked: The technological singularity is approaching. What science fiction books do you recommend for the purpose of mentally preparing for, and affecting, what according to singularitarians like Ray Kurzweil may happen during the coming 40 years or so? I want science fiction that treats issues on the coming continuingly accelerating technology development and its political consequences, stuff that is interesting for humanity’s development; paradise engineering scenarios as well as disaster scenarios. I want the kind of hardcore, science-based but still mind-blowing science fiction ideas that singularitarians say may be relevant to our political (and also individual) decisions in our REAL life the coming decades.
PS Anyone tempted to answer that I shouldn’t rely on science fiction if I want to prepare for the future, please google “technological singularity” and read about it first!

Serpentine Fire asked: I enjoyed the Hitchiker’s Guide to The Galaxy series and was wondering if there were any other science fiction books that were comedic? Spoofs or just plain funny in their own right? Any suggestions?

>;-;< asked: I know that very technical stories like one of Jules Verne’s are science fiction, but what about stories of werewolves, etc.
Does this count as science fiction? Does it count as fantasy fiction? Is fantasy fiction a subgroup of science fiction?

Roald Ellsworth asked: I’m writing a science-fiction book with a female main character, and would like to see what’s on the market already. Most of the books I’ve found have male main characters. Do you know any titles? Did you like the books? Thanks everybody.

Jett asked: I like books that feature strange things happening to normal people (Not books based solely on fantsasy lands or different species.) I enjoy books where normal (or at least they think they are normal) people go on journeys or go through odd science fiction happenings.
Any suggestions?

Handsome young lover asked: I am redesigning a speculative fiction course (science fiction, fantasy and horror) and would love suggestions on in-print anthologies I could use. I have several on hand, but I’d like to make sure I haven’t missed one. It would also be helpful if it is printed in the U.S.
Gardner Dozois’ anthologies are excellent, but they only include current stories, not classics. I do need an anthology that includes a good representation of the three respective genres’ “best” stories, such as the work of Asimov, Heinlein, LeGuin, Poe, Lovecraft, etc. Thanks everyone for the great input so far, but I’m still looking.
